Affectionately known as Pearl of Tapajos, Santarém is a pleasant town in the State of Pará, located in central Amazon, on the confluence of the Amazon River and Tapajós River. In front of the city, occurs a big spectacle: the meeting of the waters of these great rivers, which flow for miles, side by side, without mixing their waters of different colors and densities.
Because of the crystalline waters of the Tapajós River, Santarém has more than 100 km (62 mi) of natural beaches, like the village of Alter do Chão, known as the "Caribbean in Brazil" and chosen by The Guardian as one of the most beautiful Brazilian beaches and the most beautiful fresh water beach.
